"A bratwurst? Aren't we the optimist."
So set a wrap.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Oh, that was a quick one. Set into Goma Wash. Okay.
SPEAKER_04You have no idea how true that is.
SPEAKER_05And with me is my friend and co-host, and a person that I personally cannot find one thing that I dislike, let let alone hate about Megan Abel.
SPEAKER_01Oh, thank you. Hey guys.
SPEAKER_05Very welcome.
SPEAKER_01It's good to be back in the studio. The summer has been nuts for both of us. I definitely, yeah, I definitely know uh you did a wonderful job in your show. Oh, thank you. That was really good. Thank you very much. You want to tell the listeners a little about like your extracurricular activities?
SPEAKER_05Not much to tell. I um I auditioned and I auditioned for a role in uh in the show Picasso at the La Panage Hill. Uh so I auditioned for that back in the spring. Got the part of Freddy, and uh yeah, it was a great part. Great part, great cast. Um just amazing to work with every single person involved in that show. And man, it was a great show. You know, you were there. Yes, you saw one.
SPEAKER_01No, I loved it. I loved it. I laughed a lot. It was a great show. It was, it was a lot of fun. It's written by Steve Martin, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the Steve Martin.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so yeah, it was great. I I do love Steve Martin's um, you know, you can always tell in his pieces like that he writes, like he loves theater. He loves he just loves acting, and yeah, I I loved it. It was great. Shout out to Richmond Theater.
SPEAKER_05Yes, and I I actually um didn't think about this. I'm gonna make this quick. Um, so there's a part where Picasso, Einstein, and the Messenger, you know, was clearly supposed to be the king. Um they're talking about how they hope they don't die young, and then Elvis and they're like, Are you dead? And he's like, Yeah, pretty much. And it's like, how you know, how is it? And he's like, eh. I'd give it a three. That is like totally from his um his movie LA Story. Uh it was came out. Have you ever seen it? No. Came out in the early 90s, and they're just like, they're out in LA and they're like rating everything. It's all like, oh, you know, I always gave that relationship about a four and this and that. So yeah, totally right up Steve Martin's alley.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, loved it. Yeah, it was great.
SPEAKER_05It was, it was a great time. Um, and when the show ends, it's always bittersweet, but it's gotta come to an end sometime. But yeah, and it was it was tough to say goodbye to Freddie. That was a great part. I love it.
SPEAKER_01You were embodying Freddie throughout your whole part. Are you are you more of a method actor? Main. Do we take Freddie to work?
SPEAKER_05No, not yet. Uh, not a method actor yet, mainly because my wife will not allow it. So I don't think she'd I I believe me, I pitched the idea years ago and she's all like, no, Mick, no. It's like no, no method acting.
SPEAKER_01I feel like if I was like in Hollywood, I would probably have to method act. I mean, I watch Bridgerton and I become uh British for a very long time. Like my son, my four-year-old, mom, stop talking like that. He doesn't like, yes, Saya.
SPEAKER_05So he does not dig the British accent.
SPEAKER_01No, he does not.
SPEAKER_05He just not. Well, I think it's actually kind of sad that you know Bridgerton is what turns you British, but I mean we all have we all have it's usually it's usually uh Pride and Prejudice. So God never mind how anyone watches Bridgerton.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's so good.
SPEAKER_05I've seen a few episodes. There was one that one season where the um uh the guy, the really handsome one, he's like, isn't he kind of betrothed to the Indian woman's younger sister? But there he's clearly in love with her. He's courting her. Anyway, and he's clearly um in love with the older sister. And like there's some like half a dozen times where they're alone and they can't be alone, and then they're about to kiss and they turn away. It's like no, we we mustn't, we can't. It's not how things are done.
SPEAKER_01Mick, it's called drama.
SPEAKER_05It's like, oh yeah, it's called kiss my ass is what it's like. It's called romance.
SPEAKER_01There was a lot of good, a lot of good sexiness.
SPEAKER_05I will say, yeah, if it if it had, if there wasn't all the tits and ass in there, I probably wouldn't even be interested. Then again, I'm a pig, so it's okay.
SPEAKER_01My friend Lisa had told me about Bridgerton, and she was like, Oh yeah, there's some good sex scenes in there. And so I'm watching the first season, I'm like, there's really not, you know, like okay. And then the end, it's like bam, bam, they do it in the stairs, they do it in the hallway, they do it everywhere. I was like, holy but Jesus.
SPEAKER_05All right, okay. I mean, hey, you know, maybe I'll give it another shot. So you never know. All right, with all that being said, okay, and we covered all the tits and ass in Bridgerton. Thank God we got that out of the way. School is officially back in session, actually has been in the back in session for a couple weeks now. And with that fact in mind, with a near brilliant idea of Megan's, we are doing a couple of school themed movies, and we are kicking off with 10 things I hate about you.
SPEAKER_01Hopefully, for those who haven't seen it yet, we'll want to when we get done chatting about it. Um, because it was a fun film. And uh let's find out who knocked up Kat's sister.
SPEAKER_05Yes, let's. It was a lucky bastard that got the knockout Bianca Stratford. She hasn't really got knocked up. With all that being said, let's get to the trailer.
SPEAKER_00Because I like my sketchers, but I love my product backpack.
SPEAKER_08The youngest Stratford is the most popular girl that had you a high.
SPEAKER_01You're asking me out.
SPEAKER_08I'm down, I've got the 411, and you are not going out and getting GD with some boy. I don't care how dope this ride is. It's the only thing they have in common.
SPEAKER_07Oh my god, it's called the colour.
SPEAKER_08Okay, you can date. But she does. No one will go out with that. It's a problem.
SPEAKER_04Would any of you be interested in dating cataracts trapped for maybe if we were to left two people alive.
SPEAKER_07I know no goats. Are there goats?
SPEAKER_08And what about him? I created a live dump. Everything but the beat is a chance.
SPEAKER_05William Shakespeare. And was directed by directed by Gil, is it Junger?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say younger. Younger? Yeah. Yeah. I feel like that's like a Swedish or you know, younger.
SPEAKER_06Freaking Swedes.
SPEAKER_05And it stars the late great Heath Ledger, Julia Styles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Larissa Olenek, David Crummulz, Andrew Keegan, and Larry Miller. And with that, 10 Things I Hate About You.
SPEAKER_01Oh yes. Before you start, um What do you need? I want to make a correction uh to what I said about Julia Styles. She was not a ballerina at one point. Uh she took classes for her role and saved the last dance, but was never on her way to Juilliard for dance, like I had mentioned in our last episode. So I just wanted to, you know, make a correction.
SPEAKER_05Wait a minute. Hold on. Julia Stiles was not another. She wasn't a ballerina.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, last episode when we were talking about dirty dancing, I mentioned her in the movie and that I thought that she had actually been attempting to go to Juilliard for ballet, but that is not true. She only took a couple ballerina classes for Save the Last Dance. And actually, if it wasn't for this, like this movie, the part where she's dancing on the table at the party, uh, showed that she had rhythm. And so that is kind of what assured them that she could do that part and save the last dance.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm sorry. You you lost me at the point where I found out that she wasn't a ballerina. Megheads and Megheads, that is the sound of my world officially coming to an end. That I just everything means nothing now.
SPEAKER_02So so that's a wrap.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Oh, that was a quick one. Set in Tacoma, Washington.
SPEAKER_02That's what she said. Okay. Ouch.
SPEAKER_04You have no idea how true that is.
SPEAKER_05Set in Tacoma, Washington, and loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Ten Things I Hate About You focuses on sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford, played by Julia Stiles and Larissa Olenick. High school age teenagers at Padua High, who are total and complete polar opposites. Kat being the older of the two, played by Julia Stiles, being the angry, intimidating, and antisocial senior with plans to attend Sarah Lawrence College, of course. And Bianca, played by Larissa Olenek, being the ever-popular, let slightly shallow sophomore who craves and loves the attention she gets from boys.
SPEAKER_01Dude, Mick, the school they filmed at, which was actually Stadium High School, a real high school, is so unreal. Like this building, the location of it is gorgeous. Um, I had to do like a deep dive. It's a French chateau style building built in 1891 as a hotel and then converted to a school in 1906. I had to look it up because um yeah, it was pretty cool. And it had some famous visitors like ex-US uh our former um US presidents, uh like Theodore Roosevelt. Woodrow Wood I cannot talk tonight. We should have done a little bit more unique New York before we got started.
SPEAKER_02But just roll with it.
SPEAKER_01Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding. Yeah, and it serves like 1,700 students, grades nine through twelve. 1700 students.
SPEAKER_05That's a lot. That is a lot.
SPEAKER_01If you were in your top 10%, good for you.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I'm trying to think. I think my graduating class back in 99 had about I'd say roughly about 250. So, I mean, let's just say, I mean, that could be anywhere from I don't know, 925 to a thousand total students at my school, but which I don't know, but yeah, 1700 that's quite a bit more. And I'm so glad that that high school that clearly lasted 15 whole years as a damn hotel, they decide okay, we're just gonna turn it into a new high school. Um had a president like Theodore Theodore Roosevelt, that's all well and good, but then of course an incredibly racist uh president in Woodrow Wilson and one of the most corrupt presidents, and that is saying something in Warren G. Harding.
SPEAKER_01So well, it definitely looks like it's a school of money, and where money is, corruption usually follows, though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so good job there, stadium high school.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it does look like it is teaching some of or housing some of the future CEOs and you know, lawsuits.
SPEAKER_05More than likely. I think you're you're you probably actually hit the nail directly on the head on that one. Yeah. Bianca Stratford is noticed by brand new Padua High student Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon Levitt. And he is instantly spitten. Of course, who wouldn't be? Um uh and actually may actually be in love, despite the advice from his newfound friend Michael, played by David Crummults. Um Michael tries to advise Cameron, sorry, the dog barked and it kind of kind of threw me off my game. Oh co-fax. Yeah. Michael tries to advise Cameron to let it go due to the simple fact that the Stratford sisters are not allowed to date until after graduation. Cameron does not heed Michael's advice and decides to learn French, which Joseph Courtlevitt speaks uh fluent French in real life anyway. He decides to learn French so he can tutor Bianca and use that as a way to get closer to her. Very optimistic of you, Cameron.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, oh the days when there were plans to hatch to get the girl. Nowadays I'd say like, what, eight out of ten boys would probably just like shoot her a text. They don't even get out of the car. Yeah. Like, I'm here.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So what's going on? Let's go. Move it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Move it, woman. Move your ass. Or like with the if uh boy doesn't know the girl in these uh in this day and age, does he still shoot her a text? That's kind of weird, though, right?
SPEAKER_01If a boy doesn't know her, yeah, uh I don't know what these kids do. I don't well if there's gonna be like some form of communication, it's gonna be a text or a message on some social media platform.
SPEAKER_05Uh see when I was on the case.
SPEAKER_01It's gonna be a text quite yet unless her number is listed.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And with that, she's probably just gonna be like, Who is this? How the hell did you get my number?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Weirdo.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_05Oh, hey, it's that guy. Red flag. Yeah, it's that guy you never uh that you never talk to. We're in three classes together and be like, uh now you know why I don't talk to you, buddy. All right. Unfortunately, Bianca is also noticed by Joey Donner, played by Andrew Keegan, a completely self-absorbed and dare I say total douche of an aspiring model. Despite the obvious tension between Joey and Kat, Joey still decides to pursue Bianca, but not out of genuine affection, but simply because he can.
SPEAKER_01I loved Andrew Keegan in this role. I mean, he is such a handsome guy, douchey in this role, and like perfectly like he looks douchey. I hate to judge him in this, but he just does look douchey, but that's like what a ridiculously man comes off as you don't maybe think that he comes off a little date rapey or oh yeah. I mean his character in this film is is very like we're hatching a scheme so that I can sleep with the my ex-girlfriend's younger sister who's still a virgin. Yeah. You know, yeah, it reads creepy. It reads all of that rapey, creepy. Um, but yeah, he did grace the cover of my like teen magazines when I was like 12 or so.
SPEAKER_05I think I watched a watch mojo top ten list of top ten actors that just kind of like fell off the face of the earth, and they made it sound like he joined some kind of weird cult.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really? Yeah, I'd have to do a deep dive on him.
SPEAKER_05Like he s they started or joined some new upcoming religion or something like that, but it sounds like a cult.
SPEAKER_01Scientology?
SPEAKER_05No, no, I don't I don't think he's got I don't think he's got Scientology money.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I don't know. He did some good good films. Um did he? Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Uh there were just some points in this movie where he says stuff and like the way his face is angled, it just makes his mouth look weird or something like that. Like the part where he saw like money I've got. This I'm gonna do for fun. Yeah, if you notice, like his lower lip is like jetting out a little bit. It's look, it looks weird, really. Talk about throwing me off my game. That shirts. Yeah. I'm a little worried personally about why I notice things like that, but you know, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Uh no. I mean, you look at like a facial expression when somebody says something and it's like, oh, that was classic. Like that was great. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So it's like weird too. Yeah, and then there's other parts in the movie where it's like where I can see where you're coming from. It's like, okay, yeah, he's not a bad looking dude at all. But I see in your, you know what? I'm I'm not gonna uh piss on your boots on this. I'm gonna let you. It's in blue here, so clearly it's from you. Does blue make it true?
SPEAKER_01I was talking about my my love for Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Devin Sawa.
SPEAKER_05I just threw open my mouth open.
SPEAKER_01And all of those, no. Whatever.
SPEAKER_05Jonathan Taylor Thomas really has that hair when five foot three of Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
SPEAKER_01Well, he was taller than me when I loved him. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_05Like any kind of real woman, and they're like, she he'd be like, you know what? No, this is not gonna happen. I can't date a guy who's gonna need a step stool to perform Cunolingus here, okay?
SPEAKER_02So Gros! Gross.
SPEAKER_05I will say that I will say this about JTT though. He is very smart. He's like really smart. I mean, anybody's smart compared to me, but I mean, this guy went to Harvard. I tell people I went to Harvard as a joke. So but one person did believe it. They're like, You're going to Harvard? I'm like, yeah, you didn't know that? Yeah, they were Ivy League, all the way from it.
SPEAKER_01That's your audience, then.
SPEAKER_05That person that believed there for a hot second. I mean, I have not seen this individual in a long time. And Devin Sowell, really?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Casper? He was in Now and Then.
SPEAKER_05Wasn't he like 12 when he did Casper?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. He was like my age. I am 40. When I was a teenager, he too was a teenager. And yes, I loved him.
SPEAKER_05I turned 45 in less than two weeks.
SPEAKER_01I know. I I I know. I got an invite.
SPEAKER_05An invite to what?
SPEAKER_01Nothing.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_01Nothing?
SPEAKER_05Do you it better not be another fucking surprise party?
SPEAKER_01Uh Megan? I don't know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_05Um, I don't I'm on top of this.
SPEAKER_01We need to stop. Let's just go on. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Continue talking about our yeah, no more JTT, no more Devin Sawa, no more surprise parties. No, no, no, no. In the words of Margaret Thatcher, no, no, no. So Kat and Beyond, because we're going we're talking about this later after we were at this episode.
SPEAKER_01I I have to go, like, as soon as we're done. Yeah, we have to. I gotta go pick up my kid.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's why they that's why we have phones. We'll definitely I'm I'm gonna have to have a little conversation with my wife about this.
SPEAKER_01My mouth really should be foot-shaped. As of late, it has really been in there.
SPEAKER_05No, I'm I'm I'm I'm glad. I'm glad you let that slip. Kat and Bianca's father Walter played by the late, or not late, excuse me, no, not late, by the great Larry Miller, who I freaking love, Larry Miller, but we'll get into all that later. Kat and Bianca's father Walter alters his rule of his daughters not dating until after graduating to allow Bianca to date. But only if Kat does. He does this knowing that Kat refuses to date any of the boys at their school, actually refuses to date at all.
SPEAKER_01Can we just mention the fact that their dad is like what I think is an OBGYN? I mean, which may also bleed into the reasoning of their mom.
SPEAKER_05That's a pun. That's a pun if I've ever heard one.
SPEAKER_01Too much vagrina? I don't know.
SPEAKER_05You're talking about Jonathan Taylor Thomas again?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm just saying, like, in the story, their mom leaves, you know, she didn't die, she left.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So which I thought was an interesting choice. You know, and he's obviously an OBGYN. And uh yeah, like why'd this mom leave? What what is it like to be married to an OBGYN when you are a woman and they are a man? What is it like? Feel free to email us.
SPEAKER_05I would say, yeah. I'm I'm sure I have a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01At the cinematic mic at gmail.com. I want that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I need to know.
SPEAKER_05And you know the thing is, I'm sure we're I'm sure that we probably will get some fan mail about that because I'm sure we have quite a few listeners that are not only doctors, but obstetricians and gynecologists.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. I'm sure we're uh we're on their top playlist of when they're performing their surgeries.
SPEAKER_05Well M Mick and Megan, they put on a new episode. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_01Strap on their gloves like in Gray's Anatomy and like hit that cinematic Mick podcast.
SPEAKER_05Let's hear it. I want to hear that damn elevator music. I want the Mick. Play that shit while I'm scrubbing in. At their first tutoring session, Cameron wastes no time and asks Bianca out on a date. She begins to accept, but tells Cameron that she cannot date unless her older sister does, and reminds him that that is next to impossible. Bucko problema there, Curtis. With this, Cameron and Michael together attempt to find a suitor for Cat, but to no avail. But by luck of the draw, Cameron notices known Padua High bad boy, Patrick Verona, played by Heath Ledger. Patrick is approached from both sides. See, you could sit there and you could tell me that you had it bad for Heath Ledger, and I would be like, okay, you know, I understand that. A lot of women do. A lot of women did. Not for Devin Fucking Sawa, Megan.
SPEAKER_01Dude, Heath Ledger was a little bit older than me, and he was not really seen in a lot of films at this point. So, yes, when he did come on the Hollywood radar, he sure as hell was on my radar.
SPEAKER_05All right then, okay. But at first, I thought you were gonna say that he might have been a little too intense for you.
SPEAKER_01No. Oh god, no. That hair, no, that smile, no.
SPEAKER_05There you go. Very down under Patrick is approached from both sides to date Kat. Cameron and Michael, because Cameron actually likes and cares for Bianca after knowing her for all all about 10 minutes. And in Michael's words, Cameron's love is pure. And from Joey, who is offering to pay Patrick to date Kat, but only to acquire Bianca because to Joey, she's nothing more than a conquest.
SPEAKER_01Dude, I want to touch on a few things here. Uh, the scene where Michael approaches Joey in the cafeteria, we have Joey already drawing boobs on his lunch tray, which is drawing a fantastic set of tits on that train.
SPEAKER_05But go ahead. Sorry.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah. But like then he begins to draw a dick on Michael's face, and that shit that went down in school back then was like unreal. I hope it's gotten better for the sake of my kids' future, but holy crap, just to like sit there and take a dick to the face is unacceptable. Like, see, it's such a fun film.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I yeah, I I took a lot of shit in high school.
SPEAKER_01Um, I wouldn't say But a dick wasn't one, was it? That's right.
SPEAKER_05No, um it was it was always 99 problems, but a dick ain't one. That's right. It was always words, um, but nobody ever really put their hands on me. Certainly nobody ever grabbed my face and turned it to the side so they could draw a uh dick and balls on my face and be like, fucking hands off me. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I'm just like, oh, I need your help, so I'm just gonna take this.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's like uh yeah, it was just one of those things for me where it's like I I I get uh you know you're gonna you're gonna rip on me because I looked a little goofy, but you're not putting your hands on me. That's not that's not gonna happen. Patrick accepts both offers and is essentially playing on both sides of the fence. After pursuing Kat, they start to develop genuine feelings for each other, even with there being a couple of bumps in the road. Patrick even asks Kat to the prom, but is met with hesitance and suspicion from Kat, who is convinced that Patrick is only asking her because he's getting something out of it. And in reality, Patrick would have been like, you know what? I can get a job, make my own money. Screw this, I'm I'm bouncing. Kat and Bianca have a fight after Bianca realizes that she won't be going to prom due to Kat not going. This leads to Kat telling Bianca that she and Joey had previously dated and slept together when they were in the ninth grade. This explain this explains why Kat now hates Joey. Kat decides to attend prom with Patrick, and Bianca accepts Cameron's invite to prom.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh, the dad. Walter in his consistent effort to make uh his girls understand that sex leads to teen pregnancy, even by going as far as having his daughter Bianca put on the belly, which was a strap-on vest with a weighted protruding stomach to replicate a pregnant belly.
SPEAKER_05I was saying it almost kind of looks like some kind of weird Ed Geen thing or something like that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, a scene to which we owe the line, Who Knocked Up Your Sister? But let's go back a bit and chat about some great scenes we have the great scene of Heath Ledger or Patrick wooing Kat by a huge gesture of singing the great Frankie Valley song, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, utilizing the school stadium sound system and evading school security very well.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I have like read somewhere that the the guy who played the security guard was just exhausted by the end.
SPEAKER_05Well, if if you and I'm I'm probably gonna watch this, I've I've watched this movie like eight or nine times getting ready for this episode. And I usually when um when we rap, I watch it one more time as kind of like an encore, right? If you watch it again and you watch that scene again where it kind of camera pans out and you can kind of faintly see Patrick running up the stairs, and the one security guard that's actually in somewhat decent shape is chasing after him. The uh portly one of the two, he's just kind of going off to the left, like, oh screw this. I'm not chasing after some 17-year-old kid, I'll never catch him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he was done.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh yeah, he was he was done when he took that and those couple pats to the ass.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this scene was so great, you know, that they even mocked it and not another teen movie.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Just just sing to her, and he starts singing, uh, is it Janie's got a gun by Aerosmith?
SPEAKER_01Yes. And then uh I love her returning her affection by flashing the soccer coach, like not necessarily the choice to do it, but just the gesture of I'm going to do something to like, you know, help you out. Um but yeah, and who who knew that an ode to William Shakespeare would involve a good boob flash?
SPEAKER_05But a good boob flash? Shit.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, we didn't get to see it, so we can only imagine, right? Use your imagination, Mick.
SPEAKER_05It's like, oh, believe me, I have. Like I said, I had a giant crush on Julia Styles back in the day, but it's like, come on, get out of here with your little ass titties.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then we have the great scene of the game. A cop ain't gonna do it, sucker.
SPEAKER_06Sorry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we have the great uh paintball scene, which was like, what were they paint-soaked balls or balloons? Or it was like literal paintball. It was not a paintball gun.
SPEAKER_05It's a uh yeah, it's like this obstacle course or something like that. It's just loaded with like old industrial pipe and valve uh valve wheels or whatever, or just yeah, valves to do like, man, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_05How many kids freaking tripped and bifted on that thing and knocked out a couple teeth and like, oh, that's uh that's done for this weird little paintball that we got. It's not even paintball. Like you said, it's like water balloons filled with paint.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know, but um I love this, and I, you know, they're all falling in love during their paintball excursion. And actually, my 17-year-old nephew, him and his girlfriend dressed up like this for Halloween, the scene, and so cute. I mean, they took their little um outfits and they actually like just threw paint at them and then let them drive over and I but they were so cute, and I just love that like the next generation is considering this a cult classic.
SPEAKER_05Uh it is I mean, I guess that that depends. I don't know if I would consider it a cult classic.
SPEAKER_01It's gonna be their like you know, breakfast club kind of Okay, all right. You know, you got like the genre American pie that's gonna go down, stifler's mom. So the next generation.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. But yeah, the whole thing with um with Kat flashing her tits and detention, I don't know. That wouldn't work. If I were the teacher, I'd just be like, all right, get out of here. Go on, beat it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like, can't do nothing with an A cup, honey. Go on. C cup or higher. That's what I'm gonna get. That's what I'm gonna get engraved on my urn.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05That is getting engraved on my urn when I go. When I go on to my great reward, and people are gonna see it and be like, oh my god. Like he really actually had that in his will. C cup or higher in quotations.
SPEAKER_01The cinematic mechanic hey, my husband has uh in his will that um to have on his gravestone if he has one. Dave Waller did this. Nice. It's one of his navy buddies. Okay.
SPEAKER_05At prom, an embarrassed Joey, and excuse me, an embarrassed Joey outs Patrick on accepting his money to date Kat. Kat is understandably pissed about this and leaves Patrick at prom during his attempt to explain his side of the story. Oh, you better believe what I just said. That's gonna come into account later, but we'll get to that. Um, on the other side of this, Joey also punches Cameron, but quickly takes a much needed and humbling ass whooping from Bianca. The shit, Bianca, I'm shooting a nose for you tomorrow. Uh, after this, it is official that Bianca and Cameron are a couple. All right, I want to say this. When Patrick goes running after Kat and they're arguing, and he grabs her and kisses her. It's like, I won't, it's like, dude, do you really think this is the time for that? She is pissed off at you, dude.
SPEAKER_01You know, I I that choice, that choice, uh definitely like really, I think, shaped people and how they problem solved in relationships. They're like, we just need to kiss to make it fine. No, it's called a conversation and accountability. Yeah, don't gaslight me with your lips.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, another movie that I've been watching lately. Have you ever seen the movie Highlander?
SPEAKER_01Oh god, years ago, maybe bits and pieces. I don't even think all the way through.
SPEAKER_05In the words of my friend JD Spetz, I will ride hard for Highlander. The sequels, not so much, but the first one, I will ride hard for that movie. Especially the scene where uh Connor tells Brenda that he's over well over 400 years old, he's immortal, and then puts a knife in her hand and guides her hand to actually stab him in the chest. And of course, after that scene, they get naked. And they fuck. And it's like, well, of course. What what else would you do after it's like, yeah, see, I can't die. Wanna go get it on? Okay. Sounds good. You have this badass New York apartment.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We're already here. You're bleeding, so that's kind of gross.
SPEAKER_01That's gotta be quite the adrenaline rush of like, I assume she loves this guy, right? Yeah, she stabbed him?
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so you're gonna like I just stabbed the guy and he's gonna live.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like that, you're like on an adrenaline high. Hopefully he's able to maybe you do go have sex after that.
SPEAKER_05Like hopefully he heals up uh like a vampire pretty quickly, because uh that'd be kind of weird if he didn't. So, all right, anyway. At the end of the school day following prom, Patrick surprises Kat with a guitar due to knowing that Kat has plans to start a band. Do yourself a favor, Kat, and don't start a band. Trust me, it'll only bring you heartache. Play guitar all you want, but don't start a band. All heartache and headaches. The guitar is clearly what Patrick used Joey's money to buy. Kat and Patrick make up, and that is the end of the movie. Alright. You want to go first with likes or do you want to do dislikes first? What do you want to do?
SPEAKER_02Oh, just go through the likes.
SPEAKER_05Alright, uh, I got a few here. Uh, Cameron still using the French book that Patrick puts the spade drill bit through. I'm sorry, it's funny. He destroys this book. The first time they meet, he just turns around, he's like, talking to me for right through the book. And then later on, he's still flipping through it. It's got this probably, I don't know, inch, inch and a half size hole right through it. Not exactly the most uh you know useful. He didn't need it.
SPEAKER_01You mentioned it earlier, he speaks French fluently, so he didn't need it.
SPEAKER_05JGL speaks French. Yeah. Cameron's is Cameron's learning French because he he wants Bianca. He loves her.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_05After seeing her in a sundress.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But I'm saying that, you know, he really didn't need it for his acting.
SPEAKER_05Very true.
SPEAKER_01The actor didn't need it.
SPEAKER_05Good point.
SPEAKER_01The character may have, but the actor didn't.
SPEAKER_05All right. Uh Alison Janney. Love me some Allison Janney. Here, the guidance counselor who really honestly is very bad at her job, mainly because she is distracted by trying to write a very cheesy, trashy romance novel.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I love it. I love her writing her smut novel at the beginning and like referring to a man's penises as Bratwurst.
SPEAKER_05Bratwurst? Aren't we the optimists? Scoot! Keep it in your pouch, kangaroo boy. Scoop. Uh yeah. She honestly is the R-rated version of my high school guidance. Uh my high school guidance counselor. My high school guidance counselor, one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. I mean, I mean that. No, no bullshit.
SPEAKER_01I feel like they always were.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They always were.
SPEAKER_05I'm sure there's some.
SPEAKER_01Because they were really, really trying to make a difference in that school, each teenager.
SPEAKER_05I'm sure there's some out there that are just, I mean, that they probably all hate their jobs.
SPEAKER_00There's always someone bad at their job. Yeah. Which, you know, sucks for the kids, but there's always someone bad at their job.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm sure there's a few out there that are uh what is it? Uh what was I gonna say? Total ball busters. All right. Um, do you have one? Or you can keep going. Okay. Uh Larry Miller. I have pretty much been a fan of everything he's done. Usually plays the bad guy, and by bad guy, I mean he usually plays a prick. Yeah, like any of his bad characters in movies, like Nutty Professor or Um Necessary Roughness, he's he's just an asshole. He's an asshole with power, basically. Um, so if you want an example, like I said, I I recommend Necessary Roughness and um, of course, Larry Miller's Seven Stages of Drinking, because he's after all a comic, and yeah, it's pretty funny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I uh I loved him in this, and um I've only seen him as kind of like uh I guess the bad guy or the prick, as you would say. Um, but I did love him and I thought he made a good girl dad in the film. And as you can't tell, like I love a good girl dad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's he's a he's a good man, loves his daughters so you are not getting jiggy with no boy.
SPEAKER_01I don't care how dope his ride is, mama didn't raise no fool.
SPEAKER_05Yep. And that look he gives Joey Donner at his house.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't even say anything, he's just like when he like slowly closes the door by Joey's all like no one shuts the door on me.
SPEAKER_05All right, party scene at Bogie Lowenstein's house, whose face does scare me quite a bit, actually, even though I'm a big fan of Bogie Lowenstein. Yuppie Greed is back, my friend.
SPEAKER_01Like I thought he was a teacher at first.
SPEAKER_05Yuppie Greed never left, Megan. Let's uh go ahead and think about that.
SPEAKER_01Yuppie Greed never left.
SPEAKER_05Yuppie Greed never left. So there you go. Especially in '99. So, yeah. Them turning his wine and cheese party into a full-on rager. Um, I do like this scene. Um, Patrick's motivational speech to Cameron. I felt it was a small yet good example of getting to see another side of Patrick's character. He's not a bad dude. He's I think he actually has kind of come to like Cameron a little bit. Probably because Cameron's not scared of him.
SPEAKER_01So and Cameron is like a good intentioned kid. Yep. You know, he's got the the devil and the angel on his shoulders trying to get the girl. Yep.
SPEAKER_05And uh, of course, also Michael's loyalty. Good and loyal friend, plain and simple. Can't beat that. And finally, my last one the scene where Joey's holding up the exact same picture, but the only difference being different colored t-shirts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I did love his like the these are two different looks, but what do you think? Because they're the same look.
SPEAKER_05This one's underwear. This one is a bathing suit. I actually get to act in this one.
SPEAKER_01Well, I love that it was a nod to uh Shakespeare using some of the quotes from Taming of the Shrew, because that's what this was based on. Um, I burn, I pine, I perish.
SPEAKER_05Like right at the Megheads and Megheads were burning, pining, and perishing for this episode. Well, not perishing. Hopefully not perishing.
SPEAKER_01Um but yeah, I loved that. I loved like when um oh I can't remember when his friend uh Michael was you know saying uh quoting Shakespeare and he's like, What are you doing talking like that? We're in public.
SPEAKER_06Don't say that shit to me.
unknownPeople can hear you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I I did like that, you know, they put a um a fresh modern spin on it, you know, like they did with Clueless. And yeah, love that stuff. So that was one of my likes. Um, I also loved Cat's Look and Style, because I am a hairstylist, so I will always reference a good same, you know, costume choices and stuff. Loved her look, loved her style. She was like Alanis, meets garbage, meets Lil' Is Fair vibe. And yeah. She looked like she fell out of a Delia's catalog, which I don't know what that is. I was I didn't think you did, but I don't know what that is. My sister would.
SPEAKER_05But at that time. Nice way to be. No wonder she doesn't want to be on the podcast.
SPEAKER_01I also love that the baggy jeans and stuff is kind of making a comeback. Love it. I would love to order some ginkgo jeans, but apparently I still have to save for them because they're still outlandishly expensive.
SPEAKER_05Are they?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like how like how expensive are we talking about?
SPEAKER_01They're like $200-something dollars.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, screw that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I love the Jinko jeans back in the day.
SPEAKER_01Dude, you had to have a chain attached to your wallet just to fish it out. It was great.
SPEAKER_05Um, I didn't have like the ridiculously baggy ones, the ones where like you I know I've said this pretty much verbatim on here before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, same. But um we have talked about Got jeans.
SPEAKER_05I had the ones that were just baggy enough. They were, and they were still to this day, best jeans I've ever owned.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. I love that.
SPEAKER_05But I'm not paying 200 bucks for ginkos.
SPEAKER_01Um, I also like I don't know whose choice this was. I don't know if it was Heath's choice or the director's choice, but I love the choice that was made to how Heath kissed or talked to Kat. He was always so gentle and like like listening to her while also moving her hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ears. And I just really liked those choices, it just made it seem overall really genuine. Um, yeah, I really like that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And I think it was him.
SPEAKER_01I I think so too. I think so too.
SPEAKER_05He just got into character and was just all like, you know, this is what this guy would do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, I also really liked uh the grand gestures that Kat and um Patrick did for each other. My husband and I lived uh we're a long distance for like three years, and we would always make these grand gestures. And I mean, I even rented a chicken limo that balked all over town. It just clucked all over town.
SPEAKER_05This is an actual thing, it actually exists. Yeah. A chicken limo.
SPEAKER_01A chicken limo, it is a limo that uh chicken tail and a chicken head on it, and it clucks all through town. And I rented it for day at night, and we just drove it all over and we took it to dinner, and then we took it bowling.
SPEAKER_05Right on. Okay. I wouldn't myself would never set foot in a chicken limo, so when it showed up, of course, then again I I said for a long time that I would never be part of a surprise party again.
SPEAKER_01Apparently, I was hoping you would have forgot that, but okay.
SPEAKER_05Really? I don't I don't forget.
SPEAKER_01I was really hoping like within five minutes you were gonna forget.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh. Yeah. Well, hoping one hand shit in the other to see which one feels quicker. All right. Um, dislikes. I only have a few. Um actually I only have a couple. Uh let's see here. Joey drawing the uh cock and balls on the side of Michael's face. Felt that it was a moment where this movie tried to be a little too funny. And that's pretty much about it. It might have been a little bit funnier if like um they didn't have Michael say anything like, I have a dick on my face, don't I? I think if they would have left that out and just been like, okay, yeah, it's there, we all see it. You allowed that to happen for some reason. You must really be committed to this whole thing that you're trying to do for your friend, which once again I applaud you. But yeah, I I think that would have made it a little bit funnier. That's just me.
SPEAKER_01They uh you know, it almost seems as if like Michael wasn't supposed to be giving the tour at the beginning. I don't know if you caught that, but they were like, I felt like somebody else was gonna go and meet Cameron, and he just kind of took. That role. It just seemed like a little bit. Oh, you'll have to go back and watch when you do your little encore watch. Watch in the beginning of like when he goes to meet uh Cameron and kind of what somebody says in the background. I also love how he pronounced his name Cameron. Cameron.
SPEAKER_05A Aaron. Oh man. He's to work with a guy named Aaron that was spelled with two A's, and my buddy kept on calling him A Aaron. Yeah, you're right. It usually is.
SPEAKER_01It is A Aaron. Aaron. Or Balak A.
SPEAKER_05Usually they send out one of those audiovisual geeks. Hey Michael, what do we want to say? Michael? I don't know what you're talking about. Um, and my last dislike. This movie may I know this is I know this is a trope. I know, I know it is, but this movie making it seem like a guy like Cameron gets a girl like Bianca. It's sweet, yes, but thank God it's a movie because let's face it, that would never happen, at least not while they're in high school. Megan and I did an episode on the on the Breakfast Club years back. And love the Breakfast Club to me. And it's a classic, but let's face it. Saturday, oh, we're all friends. The princess is dating the bad boy. Come Monday morning. Fucker, I don't know you. Yeah. It's like, but we had the tension together. It's like, yeah, we had the my fucking friends are around, man. Go away. After we graduate, we can be friends, but get away. Yeah. You know the ration of shit I'm gonna get from my friends for talking to you? Now beat it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it never happened, just like a switch up of like one day you're you're a 28-year-old senior.
SPEAKER_05Now get lost.
SPEAKER_01Maybe the next year you're not as cool or something, or you are cool. Yeah. But nope. I had one one dislike for this, and it was guys coming up with some elaborate scheme to manipulate to manipulate a woman to sleep with them. Uh these story lines have aided men into thinking that if they are the cool guy and they can lie and manipulate, uh sometimes the nerdy guy gets the girl, but that guy's still nerdy, and it's cool to be cool.
SPEAKER_05Hmm. Okay. It's how it's always been, Megan.
SPEAKER_01Don't like it. I know. I know.
SPEAKER_05It's always been.
SPEAKER_01And it's dumb.
SPEAKER_04It is.
SPEAKER_01It's in almost every teen movie of rom-com of like, we must manipulate the girl like we are their puppet master to get them to fall in love with me.
SPEAKER_05In this though, the only one who's trying to manipulate really is Joey.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Cameron actually gives a shit, actually likes Bianca. He just needs an inn.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but isn't that always the dilemma? There's always that good guy that sees the girl for who she really is.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_04I agree.
SPEAKER_01Which is great. We love that. Yes. Don't go for the douche. But I always hate how there is such an elaborate scheme to get a girl in bed.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you know, that's why they invented hookers. No schemes, just cash.
SPEAKER_01No schemes.
SPEAKER_05All you need is money. Alright, so with that, we're gonna move on to bullshitting on the back lot. So first one I have, uh apparently Andrew Keegan did not know how to draw a male genitalia for the scene in the cafeteria, and David Crumwalds had to teach him.
SPEAKER_00Weird.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Weird that he doesn't know how to draw.
SPEAKER_00Andrew, what what's what's up?
SPEAKER_05What's going on?
SPEAKER_00That's weird.
SPEAKER_05Don't know what it looks like.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Are you really that bad of an artist?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Were you in this cult prior to this?
SPEAKER_05No, or maybe not allowed this cult not allow you to draw balls like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what's going on, Andrew? What's going on? Weird.
SPEAKER_05So, yeah. I mean, you just have to draw. You don't have to, you know, draw like any ejaculate or anything like that. You don't have to get that creative. Just draw a cock and balls, man. You can do it. I believe in you. Even if your cult doesn't. Uh, let's see. So, with that, um, next one. This was Heath Ledger's first American movie. Cool, excellent. Uh, next up, screenwriter Karen McCullough said the title for the movie came from an old diary entry. Even cooler. Next up, Larissa Olenek and Julius Styles actually audition for each other's roles. Now that one is actually pretty interesting. And finally, for me, Heath Ledger beat out Ashton Kutcher, which could not have been hard to do, and Josh Hartnett, a little bit more difficult, for the role of Patrick.
SPEAKER_01It was actually three weeks prior to filming that Heath Ledger got this role.
SPEAKER_05Really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh I did not know that.
SPEAKER_01Uh Disney wanted to go, uh, wanted to get Heath a dialect coach, and younger was like, why in the hell would you want to do that? Um, there's nothing wrong with his great accent. We're not gonna cover it up. I'll make it work.
SPEAKER_05Um, no, it would have been lame, I think, if yeah, yeah, let him let the man keep his accent.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there are, especially in a rich school like that, you know someone's British or Australian or something to that effect.
SPEAKER_05That's right. Whipping out Bratwurst in the cafeteria, messing with the lunch ladies.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Younger was dating Paula Abdul at the time and offered Julia help from Paula for her dancing on the tale scene, to which Julia replied, No, I can dance.
SPEAKER_05Good for her.
SPEAKER_01And that was it.
SPEAKER_05End of story.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Yeah, there was a great article that was featured in People magazine chatting it up with uh Gil Younger about the film celebrating its 25th anniversary. So if you want to know some more, a little inside scoop, give it a read.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01That's all my BS on the BL.
SPEAKER_05All right. Questions. Gotta just got a few questions here. First up, do you have any interesting prom stories, either good or bad?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I do not. I have a homecoming one.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Close enough.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I um I got a nosebleed at homecoming. Well, first let me break it down. My dates friend kissed me. My date saw got mad, even though like I had nothing to do with this kiss. Oh, yeah. And then went off with my friend Sabrina, left me at homecoming, to which I was crying, got overwhelmed, got a nosebleed, have a blood thing where it didn't stop, passed out. The EMTs got called. Oh my god. I came to and was like, No, I'll have my friend take me, her mom take me to the hospital.
SPEAKER_05And I'm sorry, that's awful.
SPEAKER_01And then had to fight a cocaine rumor after said homecoming.
SPEAKER_05It was Florida. That shit's an issue.
SPEAKER_01I had to like provide doctor's notes to my dean, my school dean.
SPEAKER_05Meanwhile, he's searching your locker looking for an APL.
SPEAKER_01Uh no, I never got well, you know, if they searched, I didn't know about it, but no.
SPEAKER_05All right. So okay. Uh I've been to two proms. All right. Um, my senior year, my senior prom in '99, and then another one a couple years later because I was dating a girl who was still in high school. All right. I think I was 19, she was 17.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah. Legal. Legal guys. Yes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm not I'm not gross. I'm not a bad man. Um but anyway, uh, my senior prom did not go very well. Um, my all right, so my date, her and I, that this has been water under the bridge for years. I mean, I was over it by the time I graduated, obviously. Okay. And this was so long ago, so almost 30 years ago. But she told me that she was like really upset about her hair. Although clearly she didn't have a good hairstylist. Uh-nudge, nudge, wink, wink. So um, when I go to pick her up, she like walked right by me out of the house out to the car. Didn't put my bouton ear on me or anything. I didn't get to give her her corsage. Her mom had to pin my bouton ear on my um lapel.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_05So there was that. Um, she almost did not speak during dinner. She complained about me smoking all through dinner. I was still a smoker at the time. You could still smoke and inside. God, I miss the 90s. And um I do not. Oh, I do. You don't miss that part. Particularly 99. Oh, fantastic freaking year.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, Prince would agree.
SPEAKER_05So, yeah. Apparently, he threw some sort of party. Um, anyway, so we we get to uh the Molline Club, we get to prom. She didn't want to get her picture taken. She didn't want to dance, nothing. So we're sitting there at this table, and at first it was like, okay, we first got there and we're sitting around with friends and we're just kind of talking, but eventually everyone else got up. They hit the dance floor, they're having a good time.
SPEAKER_01Oh sorry, that's my pickups pickup my son from school, but there's no school today.
SPEAKER_05No school today. So um they all hit the dance floor, they're all having a good time, and it's just me and her sending her at the table. And then she would like get up and leave for like a few minutes at a time, leaving me pretty much by myself. And then she left me at the table with this one kid who was like all decked out in his best like cowboy formal wear. And I'm like, oh fucking nightmare. It's one of those moments where you're like, Did we die in the car? Did we die in a car crash on the way here? Is this hell? So, and then he finally left. I think he actually hit the dance floor too. And I'm like, Jesus, this is fucking embarrassing. So finally she got up from the table 20 minutes, she was gone. And I was like, Do you want to dance or anything? And she's like, uh, next song. Next song starts up, and I was like, Do you want to dance now? She said, Maybe a slow one. Slow song comes on. Do you want to dance now? I don't want to. Okay. So finally, when she got up and left the table again, it's like the third or fourth time. I'm sitting there by myself. She finally comes back and I'm so pissed off I can't even talk. And I'm sitting there and she's trying to get me to talk, and other girls trying to get me to talk, and I just got up, put on my tuck jacket, looked at her, said, I'm leaving. I said, If you want to ride home, you're leaving too. If not, get your own ride home. And she followed me into the door, and she stopped literally at the doorway. So she didn't want to leave. And I would and um one of the chaperones, the teacher said, If you leave, you can't come back. No problem. Give a fuck. And she's like, Well, can you bring me back my purse? And I'm like, Yeah, fine. So I go out to the car, get her a purse, I hand it back to her, and I left. I thought about unzipping her purse and emptying all the shit right there on Fourth Avenue and Moline.
SPEAKER_01But you're a classy guy.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sure, we'll go with it. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01You're a class.
SPEAKER_05I did leave my senior prom. I left my date there. I was really pissed off. Might have acted a little irrationally.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So there you go. Room to grow. Room to grow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And that you did.
SPEAKER_05Oh. A little bit, yeah. I matured a little bit. All right. Um, have you ever personally known anyone that was not allowed to date?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I I technically wasn't really allowed to date. Yeah. It was no, I snuck out and like went to the movies. And like, if I was going with a friend, I mean, there was an elaborate plan to get there somehow, change my clothes either prior to going or in the movie theater bathroom. Because I wasn't about to wear what my dad approved.
SPEAKER_04What did your dad approve of?
SPEAKER_01You know, whole shirts.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. Like all the way up to where the collar comes all the way to the city.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like no spaghetti straps, no bra showing, no anything like that. Like there was it had to be thick. He was very much, you know, your shorts had to be as long as your fingertips. He was very much like what the schools had the standard. So yeah, I mean, we weren't necessarily my sister did a little bit, but yeah, just I wasn't really allowed to have fun.
SPEAKER_05I was allowed to date it, just really wasn't an option for me. All right. Um, now this is a question that you floated out this idea, and I was like, you know what? This question is actually pretty intriguing. Let's go with it. Have you ever fallen for someone that you didn't even like? Is that even possible?
SPEAKER_01I mean, my sister-in-law, her and her husband, uh, how they tell their story was that they hated each other for so long in school, and then one day didn't. Huh. And then got married.
SPEAKER_05Oh, Megan, Megan couldn't stand me when she first met me. Yeah. I was I was a I was a lot.
unknownI was a lot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I was a I was a bit much much. Shout out to our friend.
SPEAKER_01My uh my husband and I met online, so um I I did choose to meet it with him, and I would not have hung out with him further if I didn't like him.
SPEAKER_05I have never fallen for someone I didn't like. I I guess I just don't see how that's possible. Maybe it's impossible for men, maybe it's more possible for women.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. There was this kid who lived a couple of doors down, and he was just like this neighborhood bully, and I really didn't like him for a long time, but our moms were in a Longer Burger Basket Club together. So I also don't know what that is. It is a collection of baskets that are like special, special baskets and dishware.
SPEAKER_04Um I'm glad I don't know what that is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, these Longer Burger Basket um parties would happen at his mom's house. And so my stepmom, you know, would take me over because he also had a sister, Lindsay, that I would play with a lot. And um, yeah, I hated him, and then just over time of having to hang out with him all the time because of our moms, like I started to kind of like him.
SPEAKER_05Even though he was still a dickhead.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but he wasn't mean to me anymore. Oh, okay. And he didn't really seem to like show that side a lot whenever I was around, so I didn't really see it. So, like, even if we were on the school bus, he wasn't as mean as he normally was. Or maybe this just happened over summer, and so he had no choice, but I didn't see it, and so I had to spend time with him and I started to like him. But ultimately, he ended up growing up to be still a dickhead.
SPEAKER_05No shit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That sucks. I think there was somebody that I went to high school with, she was in my grade, and I it it would be easier to say the moments where we actually did somewhat get along. I don't even know if that's even genuine, but we when we just weren't having it, and we always ended up getting sat next to each other in English. Um, and she'd say something to me, and I'm just like, you know what? And I was I you think I have no filter now? Should have seen me back then. I'm surprised I had any friends. I had almost no filter back then. I'm surprised I didn't get the shit kicked out of me.
SPEAKER_01I mean your prom day didn't even want to hang out with you. Exactly, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Too soon or not even, actually. I was waiting for you to jump on that grenade, and you didn't do it. You didn't do it in time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_05But I think it actually, if if anyone gave a shit to look at that whole situation from the outside looking in, I'm sure if it was like a sitcom or someone, someone would have like just jumped in and looked at both of us and been like, used to need to just knock it out and get it over with. It might have been one of those deals, but so I probably wouldn't have said no. I'm almost positive she would have. So I think she really didn't like me. So I didn't but I didn't like her, but I didn't fall, I didn't I didn't fall for her, not at all. So I don't really know how anybody could. But out of respect for her, I'm gonna leave her name out of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I just had one question. Uh, have you ever been to a party like this? Like this party that they went to in this movie that was just overtaken by teens and house trashed.
SPEAKER_05Uh no.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_05I really didn't go to a lot of parties in high school. Um, and whatever parties we did.
SPEAKER_01I definitely wasn't allowed. I wasn't allowed to date. I wasn't that would take a lot more of an elaborate scheme than I just wasn't prepared for the punishment, you know.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. Um, in this area, the parties were like, you know, hey, okay, you're going out in this clearing in the woods, or few people out at one of these like country subdivisions out here. They got this mondo freaking backyard, roughly the size of Madison Square Garden. Just got some cheap, shitty beer, a little bit of a fire going in the pit, and then there you go, you know. That was it. That was the extent of the parties that I went to. Not full-on ragers like that.
SPEAKER_01I I only knew like a kid who apparently um was having this party, and then like flyers got made uh of his address on this flyers that got handed out publicly. Like this party turned into a horrible rager of just strangers to adults, and he wasn't there for it. He ended up having to like his parents had set up for him to go to like an aunt's house or something, and so he had no choice, but had already put out that he was having this party and thought he was gonna make it. And by the time he got the chance, like his parents had come home, and it was just there was no coming back from it.
SPEAKER_05I want to say this would have been after I was out of high school. I thought about it. I thought about, you know, I was still living at home. My parents' house or their old house would have actually been a pretty cool place to have a party. Now it would have gotten busted because we had neighbors, but I mean, big yard, all this shit going on. I thought about it for a hot second because I did have the house to myself for a little while. They went out to Hawaii, I think. And then after a while, it was all like, yeah, no, no, because I didn't have a lot of friends. I had friends, I mean, it wasn't it wasn't a jag off, but I had friends, I just didn't have like a whole shit ton of them. The thing is, I was always in that situation. Someone makes a couple of calls, all of a sudden people start showing up. You're not my friend, you certainly aren't my friend. These guys over here, I don't even know who these motherfuckers are. Like, what the hell are they doing here? Well, we're here at a party and fuck shit up, yeah, clearly. So I'm I'm glad I didn't, but go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Uh I had like my friends over, my like five friends that I had in high school, and um, they were not allowed in the house, you know. Like I was like, you can hang out, but we are no one is going into my parents' house. Like my mom's house, not at all. You are not coming in. Yeah. Just my girlfriends who are supposed to be staying the night that my mom knows about.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean they can pee inside, but everybody else has to be outside.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, exactly. It's one of those things where if you you give me a situation, a genuine situation like that, where everyone shows up and everyone actually has respect for your family's house, your parents' house, I will kiss a fucking public toilet seat. Okay, because that never happens.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would just I would just be too scared. Yeah, I did not want to deal with the wrath.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. You're you're gonna have some idiot or a gaggle of idiots that are gonna show up and be like, fuck it, it's not my house. This isn't my stuff. No, start rooting around in this guy's mom's underwear drawer or some shit, or you know, start stealing shit, or just start breaking shit. It's always gonna happen. All right, so with all that being said, we have reached the Manhattan scale. This is the uh portion of the podcast where we rate this uh movie on the scale of one to five Manhattans, or Megan's drink of choice, or whatever special guests drink a choice. So um one is like uh one and done. Gonna drink this shitty Manhattan that somebody clearly didn't know how to make. Pay my tab and get the hell out of here. Or five, we're gonna be puking in the bathroom because the Manhattans are just that damn good when you forget that there's multiple shots of bourbon in each one. So for me, I'm gonna give this one a solid two Manhattans.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_05I trashed this movie recently, but I hadn't also hadn't seen it in a long time. I don't love this movie, but I certainly don't hate it. Let's face it, it came out in '99, therefore, it reminds me of a much simpler time. Megan, what is your drink of choice and how many does it get?
SPEAKER_01You know, I've thought about this a lot, and I know we usually do a drink scale, but sometimes I don't want to drink anything. And so I was choosing like, I'm gonna go with like three and a half Reese's peanut butter cups. Okay, that'll work too. That was mine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, whatever's your poison at that time.
SPEAKER_01Because um, five would be too much and I'd have a stomachache, but it would still be like well worth it. You know what? These like food scales are really hard because like the more you have, like, the worse off you feel. But yeah, three and a half uh Reese's peanut butter cups. Cause I did like this. I think it will be kind of stand the test of time of being a fun teen rom-com and become the next generation's breakfast club.
SPEAKER_05It definitely doesn't make you think, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_01I won't say exactly, but esque.
unknownAll right.

SPEAKER_03We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love these are what we stay alive for.
